This is a final photograph of the inside of the control panel which would be the only thing that the pilot could see other than looking out the side windows,. The spirit of St. Louis had one purpose, to fly as many miles as possible based on a design around a specific individual pilot. For those of you that know your history, do you know what the Lindbergh invented econometer was? Can you point it out in the picture? I'll give you a hint, it didn't work so it was removed. #aviation #spiritofstlouis #vintage #blackandwhitephotography #grandfather #aviationhistory

The fuel lines are looking good, and the underside of the main fuel tank is exactly as intended. Donald has been keeping a close eye on the special "template" soft metal that it's made from.

In celebration of the successful flight of the Spi In celebration of the successful flight of the Spirit of St Louis and its pilot Charles Lindbergh! I've been saving this photo of the airshow next to the aircraft factory in San Diego. Here from the roof of the factory itself, grandfather took photos of the show and his team (and a few guests) watching a celebration of their own efforts. There are more in this series, including hundreds of parked cars. So would you have joined them? What type of biplanes are these? Can you hear the band playing?

Camp Baldy (now called Mount Baldy) is an unincorporated community in the San Gabriel Mountains, in San Bernardino County near the eastern border of Los Angeles County, in Southern California. During prohibition, this was where the affluent visited because you could get an alcoholic drink and enjoy the casino and pool.

World War II in San Diego was a very different tim World War II in San Diego was a very different time. The city had barrage balloons all around the city, just in case the Japanese attacked. My dad always said these photos were of these balloons, but it looks like an airship to me. What do you think? What's your favorite memory of an airship? I'll add mine below.

I have always been amazed with radial engines, esp I have always been amazed with radial engines, especially when you compare them to the old school oil. Cooled engines from World war 1. What would be an engine, and an airplane design that you are most passionate about? Have you ever flown it?

Grandmother Elizabeth Walker-Hall was so beautiful Grandmother Elizabeth Walker-Hall was so beautiful. I've wondered how she would have been many times. I know that she loved to play the piano and was a sweet woman in her old age. Grandpa and her loved to go on adventures. I never got to meet her since she died the same year Lindbergh passed away. Here they are somewhere in San Diego bay (more than likely).

Here, Lindbergh just changed into his suit for the cameras. One of my favorite photos and one of only a few portraits of his friend. What do you think, could this be on a t-shirt? I can tell that it was taken in San Diego because the nose cone, which is different than the final one that he used to cross the Atlantic. That's was the first broadcast that America heard after Charles Lindbergh had taken off in the Spirit. St. Louis, the proceeding day, and landed in Europe. the live broadcast was from Roosevelt Field, New York. It was from Herbert Morrison of XNX. Grandfather was ecstatic. Everything had worked perfectly. What was the first time that you heard about this flight... In school?

On this day many years ago. Charles Lindbergh was On this day many years ago. Charles Lindbergh was sitting in the cockpit of his high wing monoplane with a steel propeller, an air cooled J5 whirlwind engine, a new technology called an earth inductor compass, and no radio or windshield to see forward. The ground was soggy and wet, his fuel tanks had been topped off so we had nearly 450 gallons of fuel, it was rainy and humid. So the RPM on the engine was lower than normal, but he knew the performance curves that his chief engineer had prepared should give him enough lift, if only he could get up enough speed. This was a spirit of St. Louis moment that the world had never seen before... And he had prepared his whole life for it. And he was in a machine that his engineer had prepared his whole life to build. And now is the moment. In life, we are often one decision away from changing everything. What decisions have you made that changed everything? Please share #bizcard #vintage #donaldahall #aviation #aviationhistory #sandiego #paris #engineer
