Few aircraft engineers had long distance expertise in navy aircraft design. Donald Hall, however, did. This was a huge asset to Charles Lindbergh and certainly allowed the young pilot a huge advantage when he was totally inexperienced with ocean flying. Hall had recently been headhunted from Douglas Aviation in Santa Monica, where his peer was Jack Northrop. Considering Hall’s understanding of huge fuel tank systems and the challenges they presented, there was no one better suited to the “new design development” that was required.
