Few aircraft engineers had long distance expertise in navy aircraft design.  Donald Hall, however, did. This was a huge asset to Charles Lindbergh and certainly allowed the young pilot a huge advantage when he was totally inexperienced with ocean flying. Hall had recently been headhunted from Douglas Aviation in Santa Monica, where his peer was Jack Northrop. Considering Hall’s understanding of huge fuel tank systems and the challenges they presented, there was no one better suited to the “new design development” that was required.

Explore this gallery, and look for the photographs of the Douglas World Cruiser (DWC) aircraft that few historians have ever noticed. Trace Hall’s long career and the photography that illustrates his intimate life. Donald Hall and the Spirit of St. Louis, a testament to the audacious spirit of adventure.
