Ryan NYP Wing Reassembly at Washington Navy Yard After Return from France (June 1927) · Donald A. Hall Estate Collection

A historic documentary photograph recording the reassembly of the Spirit of St. Louis at the Washington Navy Yard (Anacostia) in June 1927 following its return to the United States. After Lindbergh's transatlantic triumph, the aircraft was dismantled, crated, and transported home from Cherbourg aboard the cruiser USS Memphis. Mechanics positioned on wooden trestles are shown mounting the 46-foot wooden wing onto the fuselage, observed by U.S. Navy personnel in summer white service uniforms standing beside the damascened nose cowl.
