This 1927 photograph documents the rugged, deeply eroded topography of the Torrey Pines reserve in Southern California. Hall framed the shot looking down a sweeping, brush-filled sandstone canyon leading toward a dark coastal mesa and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean beyond.
