Ruggles Orientator Ground Simulator (1927)

A highly significant piece of early aviation history. This photograph documents the formally named "Ruggles Orientator," an early mechanical ground simulator used at Brooks Field. Designed with complex multi-axis gimbals, it safely taught cadets how to handle spatial disorientation before they ever left the ground.
