U.S. Navy Loening OL-8 Amphibian in Flight Over San Diego (Circa 1928)

Captured from the cockpit of a companion aircraft, Donald A. Hall Sr. photographed this U.S. Navy Loening OL-8 amphibian biplane (Bureau Number A-7845, tactical marking 1-J-7) cruising over the San Diego terrain. Designed by Grover Loening and powered by a 450-horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp radial engine, the aircraft features an integrated single-float hull with retractable landing gear. Stationed at NAS North Island, the aircraft operated across the military and civilian flight corridors where Hall conducted flight testing for Ryan and his independent aeronautical designs.
