Landing Gear Rubber Shock Bungee Static Load Compression Test (1927)

A vintage positive slide produced from Hall's 1927 negative archive showing mechanical laboratory stress testing of the Ryan NYP landing gear shock absorbers. Mounted inside an industrial compression test rig, multiple loops of vulcanized elastic shock cord (bungees) are fitted around central telescoping shock spools. Chief Engineer Donald A. Hall subjected this assembly to static compression loading to measure spring rate deflection and ensure the gear could absorb the heavy landing loads of a 5,200-pound overloaded aircraft without structural failure.
