Experimental Hall X-1 "Aft-Wing" Prototype Profile at Factory Ramp (1928)

A definitive photographic record of Donald A. Hall Sr.'s proprietary tandem-wing prototype, the Hall X-1 (Department of Commerce experimental registration X7621). Designed in 1928 following his success with the Spirit of St. Louis, the two-place open-cockpit monoplane was powered by a radial engine enclosed in an engine-turned jeweled aluminum nose cowl with a streamlined spinner. Resting on the tarmac outside the factory in San Diego, the aircraft showcases Hall's patented aft-wing stabilator configuration engineered under U.S. Patent 1,895,458 to provide longitudinal stability and stall-proof handling.
