Hall X-1 Prototype and Support Crew on Camp Kearny Parade Grounds (1928)

Donald A. Hall Sr. recorded this operational field view of his experimental Hall X-1 tandem-wing prototype (X7621) staged on the wide dirt parade grounds of Camp Kearny in San Diego. The aircraft's tail rests on a maintenance stand while a mechanic in white coveralls services the fuselage beside a vintage support coupe. The remote military plateau provided Hall with an expansive, secure runway to conduct confidential flight trials evaluating the longitudinal stability of his patented aft-wing configuration.
